President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rangers International F.C. on winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title for a record ninth time following the club’s impressive performance in the just concluded league season.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the players, coaching crew, management and supporters of the Enugu-based club for securing the league crown after finishing the campaign with 68 points from 38 matches.
President Tinubu noted that Rangers edged out close rivals Rivers United F.C. to emerge champions, describing the achievement as a testament to the club’s resilience, discipline and enduring football legacy.
The President recalled the glorious era of Rangers in the 1970s and 1980s when the club dominated domestic football and recorded remarkable achievements on the continental stage.
He specifically referenced the club’s historic run to the final of the 1975 African Cup of Champions Clubs and its triumph in the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup, achievements he said cemented Rangers’ status as one of Nigeria’s most iconic football institutions.
“I must also congratulate Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on the victory of Rangers International FC. This victory is an obvious fruit of his administration’s investments in youth and sports in the state. I commend him,” the President stated.
Tinubu further described Rangers as one of Nigeria’s oldest and most successful football clubs, noting that the team had produced several outstanding players who represented the country with distinction on the international stage.
“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement,” he added.
The President also commended Rivers United F.C. for their strong performance throughout the season and for displaying commendable sportsmanship during the title race.
He wished both clubs success as they prepare to represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League competition.
