The suspect, identified as Ibobuminate Oweifa, was arrested after the victim, Godgift Biko, sustained severe burns during the incident.
Biko is currently receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, confirmed the arrest, saying officers moved swiftly after the incident was reported.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer in the area rescued the victim, ensured he received first aid at a nearby clinic and arrested the suspect.
“The DPO immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. Preliminary investigation has commenced and, upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged to court,” the police commissioner said.
Edebor condemned the attack, warning residents against violence and jungle justice.
He said the command would not tolerate any act capable of endangering human life, regardless of the allegation involved.
During interrogation, Oweifa reportedly claimed that he caught Biko attempting to steal firewood belonging to him.

Police authorities, however, said the suspect’s account was only his own version of events, adding that investigation was ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
