DR Congo’s famous football mascot, Lumumba Vea, was absent during the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against England after failing to secure a visa to travel to the United States.

However, the Central African nation ensured its beloved “living statue” tradition continued as Lumumba Junior stepped in to represent the country from the stands during the crucial knockout fixture.

Lumumba Junior, whose real name is Kabwende, said he was proud to carry on the legacy associated with Lumumba Vea and represent his country on the world stage.

“I want to keep the culture going. [Mboladinga] didn’t come here, but we have to represent our country. Patrice Lumumba represents liberty, prosperity, power and freedom in our country,” he said.

Speaking on the development, DR Congo’s Ambassador to the United States, Yvette Kapinga Ngandu, described Lumumba Junior as the perfect stand-in for the iconic supporter.

“If Lumumba Vea cannot travel, then Lumumba Junior will carry the torch in Atlanta. Michel is the real one, but Junior is smaller and a bit younger; he’s the Generation Z fan,” Ngandu said.
She added that although Lumumba Vea was unable to attend the match in person, his influence was still strongly felt among supporters.

“Lumumba Vea is here in spirit. He means so much to the nation and now he means so much to other nations. He probably will get a visa when we win against England but won’t get one in time for this match,” she added.

Despite DR Congo’s 2-1 defeat to England in the Round of 32, Lumumba Junior’s appearance ensured that one of the country’s most recognizable football traditions remained visible at the World Cup, as fans rallied behind the Leopards in their historic tournament campaign.
