All Three 2026 World Cup Co-Hosts Crash Out Before Quarter-Finals
The three countries jointly hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup — the United States, Mexico and Canada — have all been eliminated from the tournament before reaching the quarter-finals.
The United States became the last of the co-host nations to exit the competition after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday. Despite enjoying home support throughout the tournament, the Americans were unable to cope with Belgium’s attacking strength as the European side secured a convincing victory to book a place in the last eight.
Canada were the first among the hosts to be knocked out. Their World Cup journey came to an end after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Morocco.
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi scored twice to put the North Africans in control before Soufiane Rahimi added a late goal to seal an emphatic win and send Canada packing from the tournament.
Mexico also failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 despite putting up a spirited display against England. The Mexicans lost 3-2 in a closely contested encounter, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice for the Three Lions.
England managed to hold on for the victory even after being reduced to 10 men, ending Mexico’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals on home soil.
The elimination of all three host nations marks a disappointing outcome for the countries that welcomed the world to football’s biggest tournament.
Expectations were high that at least one of the co-hosts would make a deep run in the competition, especially with the advantage of playing in familiar conditions and in front of passionate home fans.
However, while the United States, Mexico and Canada all successfully advanced from the group stage and reached the knockout rounds, they were unable to overcome their respective opponents when it mattered most.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is a historic edition of the tournament. It is the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by three nations and also the first to feature an expanded format of 48 teams.
Although the hosts played a significant role in staging the competition, their participation on the pitch has now come to an end, leaving the remaining nations to battle for a place in the semi-finals and ultimately the World Cup trophy
