Tinubu backs horse racing as tool for Empowerment
President Bola Tinubu has encouraged young Nigerians to see horse racing as more than just a sport. He said it can provide jobs, create business opportunities and help young people build successful careers.
Tinubu made the statement through Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who represented him at the grand finale of the Renewed Hope West African Horse Racing Derby held in Kaduna.
According to the President, horse racing is linked to culture, agriculture, tourism, entertainment, hospitality and business. He said the sport should be developed into a full industry that can contribute to the country’s economy.
Tinubu noted that horse racing attracts many young people, especially those between the ages of 18 and 35. He said the sport can help youths develop skills, create social connections and access employment opportunities.
He added that the continued growth of horse racing would boost tourism, attract investors and support economic development across the country.
The President said his administration would continue to support programmes that preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage while creating jobs and wealth for citizens.
Tinubu expressed hope that Nigerian horses, jockeys, trainers, breeders and officials would one day compete successfully in major international horse racing events in Europe, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
He also pledged continued technical and financial support to improve horse racing infrastructure, breeding standards and professional training in the sector.
The President urged state governments to work closely with the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria by providing land for racecourses and other facilities needed to grow the sport.
While speaking at the event, Tinubu paid tribute to the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, for helping to establish organised horse racing in the country through the creation of the Northern States Turf Club Authority in 1962.
He said preserving cultural traditions while promoting development remains important for national unity and progress.
Tinubu also praised the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria for bringing together participants from different West African countries to celebrate one of Africa’s oldest sporting traditions.
The second edition of the Renewed Hope West African Horse Racing Derby, held at Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna, officially brought Nigeria’s 2025/2026 horse racing season to an end.
