Team Nigeria targets historic Tuesday with multiple Athletics finals in Slsight

Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent will be in action across the track and field on Tuesday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with several medal hopefuls and sprint stars looking to make significant progress in their respective events.

The day’s action begins with the women’s 400 metres first round, where Patience Okon George will compete in Heat 2 from lane six. The experienced quarter-miler heads into the race with a season’s best of 51.41 seconds as she seeks qualification for the semi finals.

Fellow Nigerian Esther Elo Joseph will feature in Heat 3, running from lane two. Joseph boasts a season’s best of 50.97 seconds and will be aiming to secure one of the automatic qualification spots.

Nigeria’s sole representative in the men’s 400 metres heat, Edidiong Udo, will line up in Heat 1 from lane four. With a season’s best of 44.91 seconds, Udo will be hoping to advance and keep Nigeria’s hopes alive in the one-lap event.

The sprint events will also take centre stage as Team Nigeria fields three athletes in the women’s 100 metres semi-finals.

Rosemary Chukwuma has been drawn in Ssemi-final 1, where she will run from lane four against a quality field that includes Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye, Australia’s Torrie Lewis, Jamaica’s Jodean Williams, England’s Mabel Akande and Canada’s Audrey Leduc.

The second Nigerian representative, Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu, has been placed in Semi-final 3, where she will run from lane six. She will compete against Jamaica’s Jonielle Smith, New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, Australia’s Georgia Harris, Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira and Canada’s Gabrielle Cole.

With each Nigerian sprinter competing in a different semi-final, Team Nigeria has three opportunities to qualify for the women’s 100m final, boosting the country’s hopes of a strong medal challenge in the event.

The evening session will see Nigeria’s formidable trio in the men’s 100 metres semi-finals.

Favour Ashe has been drawn in Semi-final 1, where he will run from lane six with a season’s best of 9.93 seconds.

National record holder Kanyinsola Ajayi will compete in Semi-final 2 from lane four. Ajayi arrives in Glasgow in outstanding form after lowering his season’s best to 9.84 seconds, making him one of the leading contenders for a place in the final.

In Semi-final 3, Adekalu Fakorede will also start from lane four. With a season’s best of 9.98 seconds, the Nigerian sprinter will be aiming to book his place in the championship race.

Attention will also be on the field as Temitope Adeshina competes in the women’s high jump final. Adeshina has cleared 1.97m this season, enters the medal contest with genuine hopes of reaching the podium.
