The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned Israel’s preemptive military strike on Iran, expressing alarm over the rapid escalation of hostilities between the two nations and warning of dire consequences for regional and global stability.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria called for an immediate cessation of the sustained missile and aerial exchanges that have erupted across Israeli and Iranian territories.

The government described the intensifying conflict as a threat to civilian lives and a destabilising force in an already volatile Middle East.

“Nigeria is gravely concerned by the ongoing hostilities and urges all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint,” the statement read.

“The cycle of retaliation risks plunging the region into deeper turmoil, with far-reaching implications for international peace and economic development,” it added.

Reaffirming its longstanding commitment to peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria urged both countries to abandon military confrontation in favour of dialogue and negotiation.

The government also appealed to the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to intensify diplomatic efforts and provide a credible platform for immediate de-escalation.

“Military action is no substitute for dialogue. Lasting peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law,” it stated.

Nigeria further reiterated its readiness to support genuine peacebuilding initiatives and encouraged global powers to play a more active role in defusing tensions through constructive engagement.

As conflict in the region deepens, Nigeria expressed hope that all parties involved would embrace diplomacy and work towards a resolution that promotes peace, protects civilians, and upholds the principles of international cooperation.
