The Africa Air Passengers Rights Association (AAPRAS) has commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his bold initiative to modernise the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, nearly five decades after its initial construction.

In a letter of commendation signed by its Executive Secretary, Oluwafemi Victor Walsh, the association described the development as a significant step toward restoring Nigeria’s image as a leading aviation hub on the continent.

“It is indeed cheering news that, 47 years after, Nigeria’s former pride—MMIA—is finally being upgraded to meet world-class standards,” the letter stated. “The international airport has long been overdue for a complete overhaul to reflect the ‘Giant of Africa’ status that Nigeria once held prominently in the 1970s and 1980s.”

Walsh lauded the Minister for demonstrating a clear commitment to national development, noting that the strategic centrality of the airport makes its modernisation a project that benefits all Nigerians.

He particularly praised the choice of contractor, highlighting that awarding the contract to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC)—the same firm that delivered Terminal 2—promotes continuity and eliminates concerns over favouritism or ulterior motives.

“The award of this contract under the modernisation plan to CCECC shows transparency and foresight,” he said. “This continuity builds public confidence and shows that the focus is on quality and results.”

According to AAPRAS, the modernisation of MMIA is expected to significantly improve Nigeria’s aviation landscape, boost passenger experience, and enhance the country’s international reputation.

Walsh further remarked: “The project’s scope, complexity, and potential impact on the aviation industry are truly impressive. Keyamo’s vision for a state-of-the-art airport facility will undoubtedly benefit passengers, airlines, and the broader community.”

He concluded by expressing the association’s strong support for the initiative.

“In AAPRAS, we are fully backing the Minister. We have absolute confidence in his leadership and believe this project will deliver substantial returns through improved efficiency, enhanced safety, and increased customer satisfaction.”

The MMIA, commissioned in 1978, is one of Africa’s busiest airports and a critical gateway to Nigeria. Its much-anticipated upgrade is expected to usher in a new era of operational excellence and international competitiveness in the country’s aviation sector.
