Super Cup: Why I axed Donnarumma from PSG squad Vs Tottenham – Luiz Enrique

Quick Read

In a press conference on Tuesday, Enrique stated that the decision was his alone, citing a desire for “a different kind” of goalkeeper.

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has confirmed that star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been dropped from the squad ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur — a decision that has sparked controversy and fuelled ongoing transfer speculation.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Enrique stated that the decision was his alone, citing a desire for “a different kind” of goalkeeper.

Despite praising Donnarumma as “one of the best in the world,” the Spanish manager emphasized the move was driven by tactical considerations and squad planning.

The omission comes amid reports of stalled contract talks between Donnarumma and the club, as well as interest from other European heavyweights, including Manchester City.

Donnarumma, 26, took to social media shortly after the announcement to voice his frustration. In a strongly worded statement, the Italy international said he was “disappointed and disheartened” by the club’s decision and revealed that he had been informed he would no longer be part of the group.

He also expressed a desire for a “proper farewell” after four seasons at the Parc des Princes.

“This is not how I imagined my time at PSG would come to an end,” Donnarumma wrote. “I have always given my all for this badge.

Being sidelined like this, without the chance to say goodbye to my teammates and the fans, is hurtful.”

The fallout adds a dramatic twist to PSG’s preparations for the Super Cup final and further clouds Donnarumma’s future at the club. With tensions mounting, all eyes now turn to the summer transfer window as speculation grows over a potential move to the Premier League.
