Ekiti State’s remarkable outing at the 9th National Youth Games has been credited to the unwavering support of Governor Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, described as the “fortress” behind the state’s sporting resurgence.

The Technical Advisor on Sports Development to the Governor, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, disclosed this on Thursday after Team Ekiti stunned the competition by clinching gold in basketball for the first time in the state’s history.

According to Osetoba, the achievements in Asaba were made possible by Governor Oyebanji’s heavy investments in sports infrastructure and grassroots development programs across the state.

“This victory is the product of years of planning and investment. The governor built new facilities, organized secondary school games, and ensured that only homegrown talents represented us. Every athlete here is truly under 15 — we did not buy players or field overaged athletes like some states,” Osetoba said.

She highlighted that the new ultramodern basketball court in Ekiti provided the platform for the historic gold medal, transforming a team that once practiced with outdated equipment into national champions.

“Before, we were using an ancient upright. Today, with the new court, we have trained consistently and the difference is clear. It is historic for us, and I am overwhelmed with joy,” she added.

Looking ahead, Osetoba revealed that the state has already begun grooming even younger athletes, between ages 9 and 11, for the next edition of the Games in Lagos.

“This is just the beginning. We are running a developmental program that will ensure a stronger Team Ekiti in future competitions. The flag of Ekiti will continue to fly high,” she assured.

Beyond basketball, Ekiti’s broader sports revolution under Governor Oyebanji includes the renovation of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, construction of a multi-purpose sports hall, new administrative blocks, modern hostels for football clubs, and the provision of coaster buses for athletes’ mobility.

Osetoba commended the governor’s commitment, urging other states to follow his example.

“Governor Oyebanji is rare — financially and morally he has been a father to sports in Ekiti. His passion for youth and grassroots development is the reason we are making history today,” she said.

With the momentum from Asaba, Ekiti State is positioning itself not just as a participant but as a contender in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
