Authorities in Sokoto State have confirmed an outbreak of Dengue Fever, a mosquito-borne disease that has already claimed lives, issuing a strong alert to all health facilities.

The outbreak, recorded in eight laboratory-verified cases have been detected across major urban areas, including Sokoto North and Sokoto South Local Government Areas. Patients are presenting with symptoms that closely resemble malaria, such as fever, severe headaches, joint and body pains, and rashes.

In an advisory to public and private health facilities, the Sokoto Ministry of Health warned healthcare workers to maintain high vigilance for Dengue Fever, particularly in cases where malaria tests are negative or symptoms persist despite treatment.

“All healthcare workers are hereby placed on high alert and requested to suspect Dengue Fever in patients presenting with fever, headache, joint pains, body pains, or rash,” the advisory read.

The ministry instructed medical personnel to report suspected cases immediately to local Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers and ensure proper sample collection for confirmation. Clinicians were cautioned against using NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or aspirin in suspected cases, as these can increase the risk of bleeding. Paracetamol is recommended for fever management.

Authorities further stressed strict infection prevention and control measures, safe waste disposal, and community engagement to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Health workers were urged to report any unusual fever spikes, clusters, or deaths without delay.

Dengue Fever, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, has been re-emerging in parts of Nigeria, prompting urgent monitoring and action by health authorities.
