2026 WASSCE: Outrage as Students Told to Sit Subjects They Never Studied
Quick Read
The statement was signed by ERC official Adaramoye Michael "Lenin" and a representative of Concerned Parents, Olanrewaju Akinola.
The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and some parents have criticised the Federal Ministry of Education for not giving clear guidance on how students should choose subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
They said the ministry’s recent statement did not address the main problem: many SS3 students are now being asked to take subjects they have never learnt since SS1.
According to the ERC, both the ministry and WAEC are pushing forward with a plan that will force thousands of students to choose new subjects that were not part of their curriculum over the past three years.
The ERC and some parent representatives warned that with WAEC registration already ongoing and the exam just four months away students are being placed in a difficult situation.
They also pointed out that subjects previously available such as Civic Education, Tourism, Computer Studies, Storekeeping, Insurance, and Dyeing & Bleaching have now been removed from the WAEC registration portal.
Because of this, many SS3 students cannot meet the minimum requirement of eight subjects unless they add new subjects from the revised curriculum.
The statement was signed by ERC official Adaramoye Michael “Lenin” and a representative of Concerned Parents, Olanrewaju Akinola.
They urged the ministry and WAEC to review the process so students are not forced to sit for subjects they have never been prepared for.
