American actor and professional wrestler John Cena has officially retired from wrestling after losing his final match to Gunther in Washington on Saturday night.
The match was the last of Cena’s 16-match retirement tour and marked the end of a remarkable 24-year career in WWE. Over the years, Cena became one of the most famous and successful wrestlers in history.
The 48-year-old announced his decision to retire in July 2024, explaining then that his body was in pain and it was time to move on.
Although he has stepped away from the ring, Cena will remain part of WWE. He has signed a five-year deal to serve as a brand ambassador for the company.
After the match, fans rose to their feet and gave Cena a long standing ovation as he left the ring for the final time.
Cena ended his career with a submission defeat to Gunther, passing the torch to the next generation. Gunther dominated much of the match, but Cena showed his trademark determination. Each time he was knocked down, he struggled back to his feet, refusing to give up.
The crowd cheered loudly, chanting “Super Cena,” as the 17-time world champion continued to fight despite clear exhaustion.
