Group Urges Benin Culture Promotion

Indigenes of ancient Benin Kingdom in diaspora have been advised to promote the rich culture of the people.

The chairman of Edosa United, an Abuja based socio-cultural organisation, Mr Paul Asemota, gave the advice at the end of the year get-together in Nyanya, Abuja on Sunday.

He described culture as the basis of a people’s identity, stressing that indigenes of the ancient kingdom in diaspora, should showcase the rich cultural heritage, wherever they find themselves.

Asemota, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the association was formed to enhance unity and cooperation of among Benin people living in Abuja.

“There is compelling need for all Binis to come together to chart a common and to project the rich culture of the Binis in particular and Edo in general.”

The vice chairman, Mr Erhumwun Gabriel, said the organisation was formed “to identify and bring all Binis residing in Abuja and its environs under one umbrella.”

He said the “objective is also to inculcate in members, the habit of hard work, honesty and obedience, as well as uphold and promote our rich cultural heritage.”

A member, Mr Moses Uwiedegbe, said that since he joined the organisation,“ it has assisted considerably in enhancing my social live as a Bini man”.

The high point of the occasion was the launch of the 2012 almanac of the association.
