Kwankwaso said history has shown that anyone who betrays the NNPP never ends well politically, a remark that has further heightened political tension in Kano State.

Former Kano State governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has finally reacted to reports that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), issuing a stern warning to party members.

Kwankwaso said history has shown that anyone who betrays the NNPP never ends well politically, a remark that has further heightened political tension in Kano State.

He spoke while addressing supporters at a gathering in Kano, amid growing speculation over the governor’s alleged plan to dump the NNPP.

In a video from the event, Kwankwaso expressed disappointment over reports that some party members were considering leaving the party, though he said the development did not surprise him.

“What I am seeing is even beyond what I expected because I am aware that few, very few of you have decided to cross to the other side. Don’t worry, whoever knows them should advise them,” he said.

The NNPP leader praised his loyal supporters for turning out in large numbers despite alleged moves by some political figures to align with the governor.

According to him, the crowd at the meeting was proof that the NNPP still enjoys strong grassroots support across Kano.

“I’m very glad with the turnout today because I didn’t expect to see so many faces here. I thought they would follow the governor’s camp. But I want to remind those who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded,” Kwankwaso added.

His comments come amid sustained reports that Governor Yusuf is weighing a possible defection to the APC, a move that has dominated political discussions in the state.

It was gathered that consultations have been ongoing between the governor and key political stakeholders, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, local government chairmen and federal lawmakers.

Despite the growing speculation, Governor Yusuf has yet to make any official statement confirming plans to defect.
