Describing the U.S. action as a direct threat to regional stability, Petro warned that it could trigger serious humanitarian consequences across Latin America.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has ordered the deployment of additional military and security forces along Colombia’s border with Venezuela, citing rising regional tensions following reported U.S. air strikes on Venezuelan territory.

Petro announced the decision on Saturday, shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump said the American operation had resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Describing the U.S. action as a direct threat to regional stability, Petro warned that it could trigger serious humanitarian consequences across Latin America.

“The assault on Venezuela is an assault on the sovereignty of Latin America,” the Colombian leader said, cautioning that the escalation could worsen displacement and insecurity in the region.

Although he reiterated his preference for a peaceful resolution, Petro said precautionary measures were necessary to safeguard Colombia’s borders.

He added that Colombia was prepared to support diplomatic efforts to calm tensions but would also take steps to prevent potential spillover effects from the crisis.

“The situation must be resolved through dialogue,” Petro said, confirming that he had ordered the deployment of security forces to areas bordering Venezuela.
