The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that it has opened investigations into incidents involving several teams at the ongoing 1XBET sponsored 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF made the announcement on Monday, warning that disciplinary measures could be taken against players, officials, or teams found guilty of misconduct.
One of the matches under investigation is the quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria. After the final whistle, the game ended in heated scenes as players from both sides clashed on the pitch.
The situation worsened when the match referee was reportedly confronted by players in the stadium tunnel, raising concerns about player conduct and respect for match officials.
CAF is also investigating an incident from another quarter-final match involving Morocco and Cameroon.
During the second half of that encounter, Cameroonian players protested angrily after the referee refused to award them a penalty.
The protests continued for several minutes, with players surrounding the referee and expressing strong dissatisfaction with the decision.
In a statement released by CAF, the football body confirmed that both incidents have been referred to its disciplinary board for further review.
“CAF has referred the matters to the disciplinary board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing,” the statement said.
The outcome of the investigations could lead to fines, suspensions, or other disciplinary actions as CAF seeks to maintain discipline, fairness, and respect for officials during the tournament.
