Fubara Impeachment: APC to decide ‘when it’s time’

“The fact that I’m not willing to comment on the Rivers crisis on your show does not mean that the APC is disengaged in Rivers State.

Fresh tension hit Rivers politics on Monday night as the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it would only declare its stance on the impeachment plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, when the time is right.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dropped the hint amid growing outrage over moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly, where most lawmakers recently defected from the PDP to the APC.

Morka spoke during an appearance on ‘Beyond Headlines’ on TVC News, as pressure mounted on the ruling party to either rein in the lawmakers or openly back the impeachment drive.

According to him, APC is fully aware of the crisis rocking Rivers State but is deliberately exercising restraint.

“The fact that I’m not willing to comment on the Rivers crisis on your show does not mean that the APC is disengaged in Rivers State.

“We are a political party, and a responsible party at that. Our job is to govern our party maturely. When it’s time to share our positions or decisions (on the Rivers crisis), be assured that I will come here and share them boldly,” he said.

Morka added that internal and constitutional processes must be allowed to play out.

“But you know there are processes that must be enabled to do their job so that at the end of the day, we call it right.”

However, while the national leadership stayed cautious, the Rivers State chapter of the APC has already taken a harder line.

PM News had reported a statement issued over the weekend by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party described the impeachment proceedings as a “legislative coup d’etat.”

The party also called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, to obey a court order halting the impeachment process.

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo had last Friday issued an interim injunction restraining the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice or resolution from the House of Assembly.
