Sanwo-Olu vows new palace, road projects for Badagry residents

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call on Wednesday during the ninth-day special prayers held in honour of the late traditional ruler at the Akran’s Palace in Badagry, Lagos.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged residents of Badagry to preserve the legacy of the late monarch, Oba Babatunde Akran, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Paramount Ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call on Wednesday during the ninth-day special prayers held in honour of the late traditional ruler at the Akran’s Palace in Badagry, Lagos.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, members of the Lagos State Executive Council, serving and former public office holders, religious, traditional and political leaders, members of the royal family, as well as residents of Badagry.
Speaking at the gathering, Sanwo-Olu described Oba Akran’s 49-year reign as impactful and well spent, noting that the monarch stood firmly for unity, peace and togetherness among his people.
He extended condolences to the people of Badagry and the royal family, adding that it was an honour for him and members of his cabinet to be present to represent the state government.
The governor also assured that the Lagos State Government would continue to support the family of the late monarch and fulfil all promises made to the people of Badagry.
“The Akran of Badagry stood for tradition and the rich cultural heritage that Badagry is known for,” Sanwo-Olu said. “I urge the people of Badagry and Lagos State to emulate the values he stood for—togetherness, unity and peace—so that harmony will continue to reign.”
He further pledged the speedy construction of a new Badagry Central Palace, disclosing that contractors had been mobilised to commence work immediately. The governor also assured residents that the second phase of the Market General Hospital road construction to Ajido would soon take off.
“Badagry will continue to be a place of pride, peace and cultural attraction for both local and international tourists,” he added.
Earlier, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Babatunde Hunpe, described Oba Akran as more than a traditional ruler, calling him a symbol of wisdom, unity and cultural pride.
Similarly, the Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ajose Peter Kumayon, said the late monarch attracted growth and development to Badagry and successfully blended tradition with modern progress.
Speaking on behalf of traditional rulers, the Vice Chairman of the Badagry Local Government Council of Aholus and Obas, Saheed Adamson, said Oba Akran’s reign was marked by wisdom and an unwavering commitment to peace and unity, adding that the monarch played a key role in strengthening grassroots traditional leadership across Badagry.
