Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as a “Day of Betrayal” following the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as a “Day of Betrayal” following the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.

Kwankwaso made the declaration on Friday while addressing supporters in Kano, shortly after Governor Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP ahead of his move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Kwankwaso, the date should be permanently recorded to remind Nigerians of what he described as a breach of trust and political betrayal.

“Today, as the leader of this Movement, I declare the 23rd of January as Betrayal Day,” he said.

“We believe that day should be permanently recorded in history to ensure global awareness of betrayal and the breaking of trust.”

Kwankwaso also revealed that he had pleaded with the governor to remain in the opposition party, warning that the hard-fought mandate of the people of Kano should not be handed over to political rivals.

The defection has deepened political tension in Kano and triggered reactions across the NNPP fold.
