Seven killed, 70 injured in fatal Kano auto crash

No fewer than seven persons lost their lives, while 70 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Hadejia Road, at Kwannar Danja, within the Kano metropolis on Sunday.

The crash involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG. A total of 105 persons were involved in the incident.

Of this number, seven victims died, while 70 sustained injuries, comprising 55 males and 15 females.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, said the accident was caused by over-speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of conveying passengers alongside goods.

He classified the incident as a single-vehicle fatal crash, adding that the road condition was observed to be good and that no items were recovered at the scene.

Labaran said the injured victims were promptly evacuated to four hospitals across the state. Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano, received 24 victims comprising 17 males and seven females; Gezawa General Hospital admitted 24 victims made up of 16 males and eight females; Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital treated 20 male victims; while Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, received seven victims comprising five males and two females.

He further disclosed that the crash occurred at about 8:33 a.m. on Sunday, 8 February 2026, adding that the command received a distress call at 8:35 a.m., while a rescue team arrived at the scene by 8:40 a.m., achieving a response time of five minutes.

The FRSC spokesman expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
