Arsenal stumble as Brentford blow title race wide open

Arsenal
Keane Lewis-Potter equalised for Brentford

Quick Read

The second half was tense and end-to-end. Brentford pushed for a winner, with Igor Thiago missing a golden opportunity to fire over the bar after a promising run, while Arsenal nearly stole the points late when Gabriel Martinelli went one-on-one with Kelleher only for the keeper to make a bold save in added time.

Arsenal’s Premier League title chase suffered a significant setback on Thursday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Gunners, who entered the match as league leaders, took the lead in the 61st minute through Noni Madueke’s powerful header from Piero Hincapie’s superb cross.

The finish wrong-footed Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and sparked jubilant celebrations from Mikel Arteta on the touchline, briefly easing the pressure on a side that had seen their advantage shrink in recent weeks.

However, Brentford responded with resilience and leveled the score just 10 minutes later. A long throw from Michael Kayode was flicked on by Sepp van den Berg, allowing Keane Lewis-Potter to nod home from close range for the equalizer.

Brentford pushed for a winner, with Igor Thiago missing a golden opportunity to fire over the bar after a promising run, while Arsenal nearly stole the points late when Gabriel Martinelli went one-on-one with Kelleher only for the keeper to make a bold save in added time.

Arsenal made several changes, including bringing on Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka from the bench, but struggled to regain full control after the equalizer. Brentford, meanwhile, showed their typical tenacity under Thomas Frank, earning a deserved point against the title favourites.

The result leaves Arsenal four points clear at the top of the table, a notable drop from a recent nine-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.
