The Lagos State Government has provided an official update on the case of a young woman, Mirabel, whose shocking account of sexual assault at her residence went viral on social media earlier this week.

In a statement released by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVGA), officials confirmed that the survivor has been discharged from medical care and that communication with a close friend verified her wellbeing. The agency thanked members of the public for providing timely information via social media, which aided in their intervention efforts.

The statement revealed that the incident actually occurred in Ogun State, placing it outside Lagos’ jurisdiction. “In the spirit of inter-agency collaboration and survivor protection, all relevant information has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State,” the statement read.

The Lagos State DSVGA emphasized that the Ogun State Police Command is now leading the investigation. The agency assured that efforts are being made to ensure Mirabel cooperates fully with authorities to facilitate a thorough investigation and due process.

Mirabel’s initial account described how she, facing difficulty sleeping unless under the influence of alcohol or substances, was at home when an intruder knocked on her door. Mistaking the visitor for a neighbour, she opened the door and was assaulted, enduring a physical struggle that left her traumatised.

“The Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against all forms of domestic and sexual violence,” the agency reiterated. “Every survivor deserves protection, care, support, and justice. We encourage anyone with credible information to come forward and assist authorities while respecting confidentiality.”
