Chelsea’s hopes of securing maximum points at Stamford Bridge were dashed in dramatic fashion as Burnley struck deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
The Blues, reduced to 10 men in the second half, appeared on course for victory after an early opener from João Pedro, but Zian Flemming’s powerful header in the 93rd minute ensured the Clarets left west London with a deserved share of the spoils.
Chelsea began brightly and were rewarded inside four minutes. Pedro Neto displayed sharp awareness to slide a precise pass into the path of João Pedro, who kept his composure to fire past the goalkeeper from inside the box.
The goal was briefly checked by VAR for a potential handball in the build-up, but referee Lewis Smith pointed to the centre circle after review, confirming the strike.
The hosts continued to press, with Enzo Fernández and Cole Palmer both testing the Burnley defence. Reece James’ set-piece deliveries also caused problems, but the visitors gradually settled into the contest.
Burnley came close through Marcus Edwards and Lesley Ugochukwu, while Josh Laurent forced a sharp save from Robert Sánchez as the first half unfolded into a competitive midfield battle.
The game’s complexion shifted in the 72nd minute when Wesley Fofana received his second yellow card following a rash challenge. The dismissal handed Burnley momentum and injected renewed belief into Scott Parker’s side.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior reshuffled his team, withdrawing Cole Palmer for Tosin Adarabioyo in a tactical adjustment designed to shore up the defence.
Burnley intensified the pressure, with Jacob Bruun Larsen and Ashley Barnes introduced to add attacking impetus. Laurent again went close, drawing a fine diving stop from Sánchez.
As the clock ticked into added time, Chelsea seemed poised to cling to their slender advantage. However, six minutes of stoppage time provided Burnley with one final opportunity.
In the 93rd minute, James Ward-Prowse delivered a trademark corner into the penalty area. Flemming rose highest near the penalty spot and powered a bullet header into the left side of the net, silencing the home crowd and levelling the score at 1-1.
