Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League summit with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea in a pulsating clash at the Emirates on Sunday.

In a fiercely contested London derby, the Gunners showed resilience and composure to overcome a spirited Chelsea side reduced to 10 men in the second half, sealing three crucial points in the title race.

Arsenal made their early dominance count in the 21st minute. From a well-delivered corner, Gabriel rose highest to nod the ball into the six-yard area, where William Saliba applied the decisive glancing header to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Chelsea responded with intent and were rewarded just before the break. Deep into first-half stoppage time, a dangerous corner caused panic in the Arsenal box, with Piero Hincapie inadvertently turning the ball into his own net to level the score at 1-1.

The second half resumed with both sides pushing for control, but the decisive moment came in the 66th minute. Jurrien Timber climbed above the Chelsea defence to meet a corner and powered a header low into the centre of the net, restoring Arsenal’s advantage at 2-1.

Chelsea’s task became steeper in the 70th minute when Pedro Neto was shown a second yellow card and dismissed by referee Darren England, leaving the visitors to chase the game with 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea mounted late pressure. Alejandro Garnacho forced a fine two-handed save from David Raya, while Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro both came close as the Blues pressed for an equaliser.

In stoppage time, Liam Delap thought he had snatched a dramatic leveller, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, sparking frustration among the visitors.

Arsenal, however, held firm through seven tense minutes of added time to secure the win in front of a crowd of 60,296.

The victory keeps Mikel Arteta’s side at the top of the table.
