He added that Iran remained committed to its sovereignty and would resist any attempt by foreign powers to influence its political future.

Iran has rejected suggestions that the United States should have a role in determining the country’s next leader, insisting that such matters are strictly an internal affair.

The Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Ahdavi Raja, made the position known during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Raja criticised comments attributed to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, which suggested Washington could be involved in choosing Iran’s next supreme leader following reports about the death of Ali Khamenei.

According to the envoy, leadership decisions in Iran are determined by the country’s constitutional structures and not by foreign governments.

He said Iran would not allow outside interference in its domestic political process.

“The United States is always interfering in our domestic issues. We are an independent country. We will not let the United States interfere in our domestic affairs,” Raja said.

The ambassador stressed that the Iranian people and the country’s institutions would decide the issue of leadership in accordance with the nation’s laws.

He added that Iran remained committed to its sovereignty and would resist any attempt by foreign powers to influence its political future.
