Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the reported assault of women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, describing the incident as disturbing and a clear sign that Nigeria’s priorities are misplaced.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi expressed concern that while many countries are investing in critical areas like education, human capital development, and women’s empowerment, Nigeria appears to be focusing on less important issues, including controversial cultural events like the Ozoro festival.

The incident occurred during the ‘Alue-Do’ festival held on March 19 in Ozoro, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area in Delta State. Reports indicate that several women and female students were attacked and sexually assaulted by some youths during the event, sparking outrage and widespread condemnation from the public.

Reacting to the development, Obi emphasized that women play a vital role in national development and should be protected, empowered, and given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society. He noted that countries like Indonesia and Bangladesh have made significant progress by actively supporting women in business and the workforce, which has helped boost their economies.

According to him, women make up more than half of Nigeria’s population, yet they are not adequately integrated into leadership positions or economic activities where they can make a real impact. He described this as a serious gap that needs urgent attention.

Obi further stated that Nigeria must begin to rethink its priorities by focusing on policies and initiatives that promote education, security, and inclusion, especially for women and young people. He warned that ignoring these key areas could continue to hold the country back from achieving sustainable growth and development.

He concluded by urging leaders and citizens alike to commit to building a safer and more productive society, adding that with the right decisions and proper investment in people, Nigeria can still achieve progress and regain its dignity.
