PDP Crisis: Wike group seeks unity, says Turaki faction Ignoring reconciliation efforts
Quick Read
Mohammed said the faction is now focused on moving forward, organising itself, and creating a clear platform for party members who wish to contest in future elections.
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Nyesom Wike has said it is still open to reconciliation, as it continues efforts to unite the party ahead of future elections.
According to the group, it has repeatedly invited the faction led by Taminu Turaki to come together for peace talks and rebuild a stronger, united PDP. However, the Turaki group has not responded to these invitations and has not given any reason for its absence.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, the National Publicity Secretary of the Wike faction, Jungudo Mohammed, explained that the goal of the invitation is to end the ongoing division within the party and present a united front.
He said the PDP has been going through serious internal disagreements in recent times, which led to the emergence of two different factions within the party.
According to him, these divisions are not healthy for the party, especially at a time when political activities are increasing across the country.
Mohammed noted that even before the Court of Appeal in Ibadan gave its advisory position on the crisis, the Wike group had already been making efforts to reach out to the Turaki faction.
He added that the court’s recent pronouncements, which supported earlier judgments from lower courts, have made it even more important for the party to resolve its differences quickly.
He stressed that time is no longer on the side of the PDP, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already released the timetable for upcoming elections. In addition, the new Electoral Act has introduced stricter deadlines and conditions that political parties and aspirants must meet.
Because of these time constraints, the Wike faction believes it cannot afford to wait endlessly for the other group.
Mohammed said the faction is now focused on moving forward, organising itself, and creating a clear platform for party members who wish to contest in future elections.
Despite this, he made it clear that the door for reconciliation is still open. He said the Wike group remains willing to engage in dialogue at any time, but such efforts can only succeed if the Turaki faction agrees to participate.
He concluded by saying that unity is important for the PDP to remain competitive and relevant in Nigeria’s political landscape, but achieving that unity requires cooperation from all sides involved.
