The immediate past Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has paid tribute to President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a key figure in his life and career.

Egbetokun made the remarks during his retirement thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Redemption Pavilion, Victoria Island, Lagos State.

Egbetokun, Nigeria’s 22nd I-G, described Tinubu as a mentor, saying that he played a pivotal role in shaping his personal life and professional journey.

“Today, I consciously and sincerely honour my mentor, Tinubu, as one of those vessels through whom God has brought me this far. My first meeting with him in 1998 was a pivotal moment of my life. Within 24 hours of that meeting, something remarkable happened, leading to a complete turnaround in my life, ” he said.

Egbetokun reflected on his life and career, attributing his achievements to divine grace.

He said that his years in service, though marked by challenges, were sustained by faith and resilience.

“I give glory to God for the gift and sustenance of life and for guiding me through all seasons. There were difficult moments, but God remained my strength and saw me through every stage of this journey,” he said.

The retired police chief described his career as a testimony of perseverance, saying that in spite of obstacles, he experienced transformation that shaped his leadership and service to the nation.

He said that his story stood as a proof that God could uplift individuals beyond expectations.

He expressed gratitude for trust reposed in him, saying that he carried out his duties with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to national service.

The former I-G thanked his wife, Elizabeth, and their children for support, prayers, and sacrifices throughout his years in service.

He acknowledged the support and encouragement by his extended family members, colleagues, and members of his church church.

“I am grateful to everyone who stood by me – my family, colleagues, and the church – for constant prayers and support,” he said.

Egbetokun, who served as I-G for two years and eight months, encouraged Nigerians to be steadfast in faith, saying that divine intervention could change any situation.

Dignitaries at the event include the wife of the current I-G, Mrs Oluwafunmilola Disu; a former I-G, Mr Sunday Ehindero; and some serving and retired police officers.
