NPFL: Rangers fined N4 million, to play without fans after league sanctions
Quick Read
Rangers have been given 48 hours from the time they received the notice to appeal the sanctions if they are not satisfied with the decision.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has fined Enugu Rangers a total of N4 million for breaking league rules during their match against Barau FC.
According to the league, Rangers failed to provide proper and effective security at the stadium. This security lapse made it possible for unauthorized individuals to gain access to restricted areas, including parts close to the field of play, which is against league regulations.
The NPFL also stated that some officials of the club acted in ways that could damage the reputation of the game. Such behaviour, the league noted, does not reflect professionalism and goes against the standards expected from top-flight clubs.
In addition, Rangers did not properly control their supporters during the match. This led to incidents where match officials were harassed, creating an unsafe and tense environment. The league stressed that clubs are responsible for the conduct of their fans at all times.
The N4 million fine was divided into different penalties. The club was fined N1 million for failing to provide adequate security, another N1 million for allowing encroachment onto the field area, N1 million for the unsporting behaviour of its officials, and an additional N1 million for not ensuring proper conduct of their supporters.
Beyond the financial penalty, the league has ordered Rangers to play their next two home matches behind closed doors, meaning no fans will be allowed into the stadium.
This measure is aimed at preventing further incidents and sending a strong warning to other clubs.
