Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Top Gun 3 is officially in development, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his iconic role as fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
The announcement was made during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday, marking the next chapter in the blockbuster aviation franchise.
The new film follows the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which grossed over $1.5 billion globally and became one of Hollywood’s biggest post-pandemic box office hits.
Cruise’s return continues the story of Maverick, who in the previous film returned to train a new generation of elite pilots, including the son of his late co-pilot Goose, played by Miles Teller.
The sequel also featured a star-studded cast including Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and others, with the film also marking the final screen appearance of late actor Val Kilmer.
Paramount confirmed that key members of the creative team behind Top Gun: Maverick are returning for the third instalment, including writer Ehren Kruger and director Christopher McQuarrie.
