Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has officially ended discussions with the All Progressives Congress (APC) about the possibility of leaving his current party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to join the ruling party.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has officially ended discussions with the All Progressives Congress (APC) about the possibility of leaving his current party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to join the ruling party.
The chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State, Sama’ila Adamu Burga, shared this update during a press conference held in Bauchi on Saturday.
He explained that the talks began after the APC leadership invited Governor Mohammed and other important political figures in the state to join their party ahead of the next general election.
According to Burga, those invited included lawmakers, members of the State House of Assembly, and local government chairmen.
The invitation was seen as part of a broader plan by the APC to strengthen its influence in Bauchi State and possibly gain more support in future elections.
He added that the discussions between both sides were initially positive, as they were based on the idea of cooperation, inclusiveness, and mutual political benefit.
Both the APC and the governor’s camp reportedly showed interest in working together and explored different proposals during the meetings.
However, after careful consideration and several rounds of talks, the proposals presented by Governor Mohammed and his allies were not accepted by the APC leadership.
As a result, both sides failed to reach a common agreement.
Burga stated that the inability to agree on key issues led to the sudden end of the negotiations.
This development has now closed the door on any immediate plans for the governor to defect to the APC.
With the talks now called off, political observers are beginning to focus on Governor Mohammed’s next move.
There are suggestions that he may remain in the PDP and strengthen his position within the party, while others believe he could explore new alliances or strategies as the next election approaches.
It will be recalled that about three weeks ago, the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, visited Governor Mohammed in Bauchi.
The visit was part of efforts to convince him to join the APC, highlighting how important his defection would have been for the party.
For now, however, the discussions have ended without success, leaving the political situation in Bauchi State open and uncertain as preparations for the next general election continue.
