2027: Obasa dumps governorship ambition, eyes House of Reps seat
Quick Read
Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is likely to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is likely to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
This means he may drop his earlier ambition to become the Governor of Lagos State.
Obasa had initially planned to run for governor and had been consulting widely across Lagos, using the political structure known as the Mandate Group, which is linked to President Bola Tinubu. The aim was to build strong support for his governorship ambition.
However, sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos say the plan changed after President Tinubu, in consultation with the party’s top leaders, chose Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred governorship candidate.
After this decision, Obasa reportedly shifted his attention to the Lagos West Senatorial seat, where he considered challenging Senator Idiat Adebule.
But this plan also faced resistance from party leaders, according to Vanguard, especially those supporting Adebule, who is seen as an important female voice from the South-West in the Senate.
Following further discussions, it was gathered that President Tinubu advised Obasa to instead contest for a House of Representatives seat.
He was reportedly encouraged to run for the Agege Federal Constituency seat currently held by Dr Wale Ahmed.
Since then, Obasa has begun quiet political consultations and grassroots mobilisation in Agege to prepare for the election.
Party sources say this development shows how political plans within the Lagos APC are shifting as the 2027 elections approach, with key decisions being influenced by party leadership.
