Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo has come out in support of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, saying Christian leaders should not be silenced by criticism.
In a post shared on Instagram, Ashimolowo said there are times when people must openly honour and celebrate those whom God has used to impact society.
He said it was wrong for respected religious leaders who have spent many years serving God and helping people to be reduced to subjects of controversy and social media attacks.
According to him, many critics attacking such leaders have not made similar contributions to society, established churches, mentored others, or influenced nations positively.
Ashimolowo stressed that followers of respected spiritual leaders should not remain silent while people seek attention by attacking influential men of God.
He described Pastor Adeboye as one of the most important Christian leaders of this generation and a great blessing to Africa and the global Christian community.
Ashimolowo warned that societies that fail to honour their leaders and role models risk losing the benefits of their wisdom and guidance.
He also said people should appreciate and celebrate great leaders while they are alive instead of waiting until after their death.
Referring to biblical examples, Ashimolowo noted that God’s servants have often faced opposition from political authorities and critics. He cited the stories of King Saul’s pursuit of David and Doeg the Edomite’s actions against God’s priests.
Despite such challenges, he said God has always protected and vindicated those called to serve Him.
“There comes a time when silence becomes ingratitude,” Ashimolowo wrote. “There comes a time when honour becomes a sacred duty. We will not be silent while men and women of great significance are reduced to headlines, controversies, and social media trends.”
He added that the Church must not remain indifferent when respected spiritual fathers are unfairly attacked, stressing that honour should be given while they are still alive.
“Too often, flowers are sent to funerals when they should have been delivered while the person was still alive,” he said.
