Nigeria Cricket Federation, NCF, has approved that Imo State will host the 3rd edition of National Women’s Championship.

In a letter to the Chairman of Imo State Cricket Association, dated 25 January, 2012, the General Manager/Chief Operating Officer of NCF, George Wiltshire stated that the federation has approved the request for Imo State to host the 3rd edition of the National Women’s Championship.

The GM further stated that it is hoped that Imo State “will use this opportunity to spread and develop the game of cricket at the grassroots level in Imo State.”

Imo State female team emerged second in the second edition of the National Women’s Cricket Championship staged in Lagos from 25-28 May, 2011 and also won the Wicket Keeper of the Series Award, which went to Obumneke Akunaru. Two of the state’ players were invited to the national team trails for the African women tourney in Uganda last December.

Chairman of Imo Cricket Association, Prof. Okoh, assured that Imo State is ready to host the tournament, adding that the association will formally communicate to the NCF of its acceptance.

Meanwhile, preparation for the South- East Championship, for Barrister Chuma Anosike Cup to hold at University of Nigeria Nsukka, later this month, is in top gear in Anambra this weekend. During the training held last weekend, players of Regal Secondary School, Nri, were drilled by Emeka Igwilo. Anambra is to feature two teams, Anambra 1st Eleven and Unity Cricket Club.
