Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why he chose to take charge of Chelsea instead of returning to Liverpool, insisting that timing was the key factor behind his decision.
The former Spain international enjoyed a successful playing career at Liverpool, where he spent five years between 2004 and 2009. During his time at Anfield, Alonso became a fan favourite and helped the club win several trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
Because of his strong connection with Liverpool, many football fans expected Alonso to one day return to the club as manager. However, Chelsea moved quickly to secure his services and appointed him as their new permanent manager in May 2026.
Interestingly, Liverpool made a managerial change just two weeks after Alonso’s appointment at Stamford Bridge. The Reds parted ways with Arne Slot and subsequently named Andoni Iraola as their new head coach, sparking speculation that Alonso could have been a candidate for the role.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport, Alonso dismissed suggestions that he turned down Liverpool, stressing that the circumstances at the time led him to Chelsea.
According to the former midfielder, football decisions are often influenced by timing and the opportunities available at a particular moment.
“Well, it is about timings,” Alonso said.
“I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you.
“I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here.”
Alonso’s arrival has generated excitement among Chelsea supporters, who are hopeful that his experience as both a player and manager can help the club compete for major honours once again.
The 44-year-old now faces the task of building a strong squad capable of challenging for trophies in the Premier League, domestic cup competitions and Europe.
Despite his strong ties to Liverpool, Alonso has made it clear that his full focus is now on achieving success with Chelsea and leading the Blues into a new era.
