England captain Harry Kane has broken his silence following the Three Lions’ heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting the defeat was difficult to accept after the team came agonisingly close to reaching another final.
In an emotional message shared on his social media pages, Kane reflected on England’s campaign, saying the players were left with an “empty feeling” after falling just short of their goal.
“No words are big enough right now to overcome this empty feeling in the stomach. We were close, really close to another final, but it wasn’t enough,” he wrote.
The Bayern Munich striker said the squad gave everything throughout the seven-week tournament but acknowledged that their efforts ultimately fell short.
Kane noted that expectations on the national team remain high, especially after England’s consistent performances in major tournaments over the past eight years.
“I know the expectations are high, and rightly so. We’ve been knocking on the door for eight years now, but again are missing that final piece of the jigsaw,” he said.
Despite the disappointment, the England skipper expressed pride in his teammates, praising their resilience in navigating difficult matches and hostile environments during the competition.
“I’m so proud of the boys and what we have shown throughout this tournament-some tough games and tough environments that we have overcome,” he added.
Kane said the team would use the setback as motivation to improve, insisting England would continue striving for major international success.
“Going for glory doesn’t always mean you will get it. You have to fight for it, get knocked down, pick yourself up and go again, and that’s what we will do. There’s no other way but to keep believing and keep pushing,” he stated.
The England captain also paid tribute to supporters who travelled to cheer the team at the tournament, as well as millions of fans back home.
“Thank you to every single fan that travelled and showed their support in the stadiums. Thank you to every fan back home for believing in us. Thank you to the boys and staff for everything you have given.”
Kane vowed that England would return stronger.
“As always, win or lose, we learn and go again.”
England’s World Cup campaign ended in the semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 defeat to defending champions Argentina, who came from behind to book a place in the final against Spain.
