FIFA Rankings: Morocco lead Africa, Super Eagles fall to fourth

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have maintained their 26th position in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Monday by world football governing body FIFA.

Despite keeping their place in the global rankings, the three-time African champions have dropped to fourth position among African nations following recent international results and the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles were last in action in June when they faced Portugal in an international friendly match. Eric Chelle’s side put up a spirited performance but eventually lost 2-1 to the former European champions.

One of the major changes in the African rankings saw Egypt move up to third place on the continent. The Pharaohs impressed many football fans with their performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16. Egypt’s journey ended after a narrow 3-2 defeat to Argentina.

Morocco retained its position as Africa’s highest-ranked team. The Atlas Lions continued their rise on the global stage after reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Their impressive campaign helped them move up one spot in the world rankings from seventh to sixth.

Senegal, known as the Teranga Lions, dropped three places in the global rankings but remained the second-best team in Africa. Algeria also slipped by one place and is now ranked fifth on the continent, just behind Nigeria.

At the global level, Spain returned to the top of the FIFA rankings after winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina, who finished as runners-up, dropped to second place.

France remained third in the world, while England and Brazil occupied the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

The latest rankings reflect the performances of national teams in recent international matches and tournaments. FIFA has confirmed that the next edition of the World Rankings will be released on October 7, 2026.
