Shooting: Team GB Aims High
Great Britain Shooting Team Leader, Phil Scanlan has said that the team had ‘great opportunities for medals not only because of their capabilities but also due to the fact that they will be competing on home soil.
‘We’ve got a huge chance of winning medals at the Games because of the nice blend of youth and experience in the team, ranging from Richard Faulds who will be featuring in his fifth Olympic Games, to James Huckle and Jennifer McIntosh who are making the first steps in their promising careers and more importantly, we will be competing on home soil,’ he said.
‘I think the team is really well balanced and I’m excited by the talent and potential we have.’
Great Britain have included Olympic, world and Commonwealth medal winners in a 10-strong line-up for the London 2012 shooting, with entrants in all classes.
Leading the challenge are double trap world number one Peter Wilson, and Sydney 2000 gold medallist Richard Faulds, who will be competing in his fifth Olympics aged just 35.
‘To be able to compete on home turf is an absolute honour for me,’ said Faulds.
‘I am very excited about competing in London, and I still remember exactly where I was when I heard that London was to be the host city.
‘I remember thinking ‘maybe I won’t retire just yet!’’
Wilson said it was ‘a dream come true’ after six years of ‘training relentlessly’.
The youngest members of the team are Olympic debutants Jennifer McIntosh, 20, and James Huckle, 21.
The full squad is Elena Allen (Olympic Skeet Women), Richard Brickell (Olympic Skeet Men), Richard Faulds (Olympic Double Trap), Georgina Geikie (25m Pistol Women), Jonathan Hammond (Prone Rifle Men), James Huckle (Three Position Rifle Men), Ed Ling (Olympic Trap Men), Jennifer McIntosh (Air Rifle Women), Rory Warlow (Olympic Skeet Men) and Peter Wilson (Olympic Double Trap).
