YGG commends Amosun for Ogun school fees reduction

Omotola Jesusina

Youth for Good Governance has commended Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun for reducing the school fees of tertiary students in Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu-Ode and Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye.

The group hailed the action of Ogun government describing it as “true dividend of democracy”. In a statement released by YGG president, Omotola Jesusina, in Dubai, UAE, she noted that Nigerians had a right to quality education at a reasonable price.

She stated that many students across the country had to struggle through school. “The Ogun government has done placated parents and students across the state by reducing the school fees. Prospective students who gained and admission to the state-owned university can now pursue their goal.”

The statement further stated that other state governments should emulate the Ogun state government. “Our state governors should emulate Ibikunle Amosun by slashing the cost of school fees. This will also reduce the influx of Nigerians studying abroad,” she said.

Jesusina said that the move by the government to reduce the fees was not political. “I don’t think the government is trying to score a political point ahead of 2015 election. The Lagos state government has also slashed the fees for tertiary students. This is good for our democracy and education.”

She then admonished students to ensure that they get the most from studying in the state. “It’s down to the students now. They have to take the bull by the horn and ensure they graduate with flying colours,” she said.

It will be recalled that Ogun Commissioner for Education, Segun Odubela, had on Tuesday 12 August announced the price slash at a news conference. He noted that the move would help in achieving their educational objectives.
