NNL: Wolves whip Delta Force 3-0 in local derby

Warri Wolves Football Club on Sunday pummelled state rivals Delta Force FC 3-0 at the Warri City Stadium in Match Day 22 fixture in the 2016/2017 Nigeria National League (NNL).

Haruna Salifu opened scoring for Warri Wolves in the 12th minute of a game well dominated by the home team.

Michael Enarune and Tanko Paul increased the tally in the 66th and 90th minutes respectively to end the unbeating run enjoyed by Delta Force in recent times.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the home team also missed a lot of goal scoring chances.

Warri Wolves who were relegated from the 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) had earlier in the first round of the league lost 0-1 to Delta Force in Asaba.

NAN reports that the match was played behind schedule because of the heavy downpour which flooded the pitch.

During the post-match interview, the coach of Warri Wolves, Steve Cole, commended his players, adding that the visitors showed “class”.

“It was a tough match. Derby matches like this are always very crucial. There was so much talk about this match in town.

“Delta Force showed that they are leally a force by showing class,” he said.

On his part, the coach of Delta Force, Tosan Blackson blamed the outcome on poor officiating.

He told NAN that he would however not allow the defeat to affect their subsequent games.

“What we saw today is not officiating. It is outright robbery. But we have lost and we are going back home to prepare for our next match and with the level of our preparation, we will win our next match,” he said.

NAN reports that both clubs are owned and sponsored by the Delta government.
