Cop Faces Trial For Killing Youth
A police Corporal with the Benue State Police command, Emmanuel Arune faces dismissal for shooting to death yesterday a young man, Aondowase Angu at Kanshio area of Makurdi, Benue State.
The State Police commissioner Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed who disclosed while speaking with newsmen on the incident, described it as “barbaricâ€.
Mohammed frowned at the Police officer’s despicable act.
“The incident is barbaric. The police officer responsible for this will be arrested, detained, tried and subsequently dismissed. We will not condone such wicked and unlawful act from our officersâ€, Mohammed fumed.
Corporal Arune has already been arrested and is not undergoing orderly room trial at the State Police Command Headquarters in Makurdi.
Narrating the incident that led his nephew’s death yesterday, Mr. Terfa Atile explained that he and the deceased sat outside their compound when the police officer dressed in mufti attempted to pass through the house.
Atile disclosed that the late Aondowase confronted the policeman and warned him to desist from using their compound as a thoroughfare.
The irritated officer without uttering a word, returned to his house, dressed in his uniform, pulled a gun and shot at the young man and immediately took to his heels.
As a result of the incident, youths in the area barricaded the major high way leading to eastern and northern parts of the country, using bonfire and obstructing free flow of traffic.
It took the intervention of a detachment of mobile police officers and road safety corps whose office is just a stone’s throw from the scene of the incident to restore peace in the area.
P.M.NEWS gathered one of the brother’s of the late Aondowase was also killed in a similar manner by a trigger-happy policeman few years ago.
The father , Zaki Anguo, who was seen weeping uncontrollably at the scene of the incident, called on the state government to ensure that the culprit is brought to book.
