Don’t Sleep In Your Offices, Group Warns NURTW Members

Few hours to the National Assembly elections, a group, Concerned Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, CNURTW, Lagos branch, has called on members of the union to ignore a directive compelling them to sleep in their respective offices till tomorrow.

In a statement signed by its interim chairman, Shuaib Enitan and the Secretary, Oladoye Omo Oko, they described the directive as illegal because it was not from the National Headquarters of the union in Abuja.

The group warned all NURTW members, comprising drivers on the wheel, Keke Marwa, NAPEP, motorcycle riders and bus conductors not to do anything that would make the security agents harass, arrest and detain them for unlawful assembly a few hours to the commencement of the elections.

It also condemned a statement credited to some members of the union that they would provide voter’s cards to those who did not register.

“If you allow yourself to be used and you are arrested by security agents, you have yourself to blame,” the group stated.

It urged members of the union to go out enmasse and vote for any candidate or party of their choice.

It explained further that the constitution of the union does not permit members to engage in partisan politics, adding that anyone who desires to engage in politics should first obtain a leave of absence from the union to enable him participate fully in politics.
