Curfew: Kaduna Residents Complain Of Food Scarcity

Residents of Kaduna on Tuesday complained of food scarcity in the town following a 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the residents complained that they could not re-stock due to the closure of markets.

They said that the few neighbourhood food shops had run out of stock and could not replenish due to the restriction of movement order.

Mr. Victor Okonkwo, a carpenter in Ungwar Gimbia, a suburb of Kaduna, said he did not make contingency plans because he did not anticipate the crisis.

“The curfew caught me unawares; I never anticipated it. So, there was no arrangement to buy food in bulk,” he said.

Speaking along the same line, Mrs. Victoria Dzeremo, a civil servant, said: “The remaining food in the house will soon be exhausted. I pray that the curfew will be relaxed today.”

Madam Comfort John, a housewife, also said the food left in her house could have been enough to serve the family but for the curfew.

NAN learnt that some of the neighbourhood shops closed because they had ran out of supplies.

Malam Shehu Isa, a grain seller at Kawo quarters, said he had been overwhelmed by the demand for grain since the curfew was imposed.

“I had enough grains in my shop before the curfew but it is now exhausted. I cannot replenish the stock because of the curfew,” he said.

Similarly, Alhaji Abdullahi Karama, a resident of Unguwar Dosa, complained that he had run out of cash as banks were also not operating due to the curfew.

Meanwhile, the residents have called on the government to relax the curfew to prevent starvation.
