The Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency, through its Psychosocial Department, has launched an ongoing Support and Healing Group Program for children who have witnessed intimate partner violence at home.
This program aims to offer a secure and nurturing environment where children can explore their emotions, build resilience, and develop crucial coping skills.
Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, stated that today’s children face numerous challenges, often stemming from domestic violence.
The Support and Healing Group Program seeks to address these challenges early, helping children acquire the emotional tools they need to thrive both now and in the future.
This innovative initiative provides children with the chance to connect with peers experiencing similar difficulties and is facilitated by trained clinical psychologists who specialize in child psychology and emotional well-being, ensuring that each child receives appropriate care and attention.
Mrs. Olive Oluwagbemileke, Head of the Clinical Psychology Department, emphasized that the program is structured to run for four weeks, offering consistent support as children navigate their emotional journeys.
Group sessions, attended by over 50 children, take place in a safe, confidential setting where they can express themselves freely without judgment.
The program combines therapeutic activities, group discussions, and creative outlets to help children process their emotions and build confidence.
“Our goal is to create a space where children can heal, grow, and learn to manage their emotions positively and healthily, despite the trauma they have experienced at home,” said Mrs. Oluwagbemileke.
