The Mountain of Fire and Miracles, MFM, Headquarters weekend lost 1-2 to MFM Ikeja when both teams clashed in the final of the 4th Dr. Olukoya African Football Championship played at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria.
The pulsating match lived up to expectations as the teams gave good accounts of themselves.
MFM Ikeja’s Aplate Enahoro drew the first blood in the 52th minute to silent the supporters of their opponents from the Headquarters .
Effort by the defending champions to equalise was fruitless as Ehis Omobuede of the Ikeja team netted the second goal to further compound the woes of the Headquarters.
The Headquarters team got their only goal of the match in the 85th minute via Ifeanyi George.
Coach of the losing team, Fidelis Inechukwu, said the game was keenly contested, but confessed that his team lost to a better side.
“We lost the match because some of my key players were absent. We had a good support from the Headquarters, but it was unfortunate that our team did not retain the cup we won last year,†he said.
Ikeja Coach, Nduka Ugbade, was excited over the victory, saying that his team deserved to win the game.
Ugbade, who captained the Golden Eaglets that won the FIFA Junior World Cup in 1985, told P.M. Sports that his team won the game because the players played to instructions.
In his closing remarks, General Overseer of MFM, Dr Olukoya, said the two finalists would be sponsored to Dubai on a training tour.
Olukoya, who prayed for the teams as well as the spectators, was impressed that this year’s edition ended successfully.
