Nigerian international chess player, Bunmi Olape, has declared that he is not afraid of competing with top African players and some of his compatriot who are playing abroad in the annual Nigeria Breweries International Open Chess Championship, which kicks off today at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Olape stated that his vast experience in the sport would help him excel in the week-long championship and commended the sponsor, Nigeria Breweries Plc. for its commitment to the game in the country.
The Nigerian star, who won the just concluded African Zonal Chess Championship, said the tourney would help the home-based chess players to acquire skills and also learn modern techniques for them to move to the next level in the sport.
The current gold medalist at the All African Games held in Maputo, Mozambique last year, said the competition would help him to prepare for the Chess World Cup in Norway next year, adding that he would not relent in his efforts to become a Grand Master.
