NUJ Games: 'Tough Times Await Mercenaries'

Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council, Deji Elumoye has warned all participating media houses not to use mercenaries in the football event of this year’s NUJ Games.

Elumoye gave the warning during the draws ceremony for the 5-A-Side football event, which was held yesterday at the secretariat of Lagos chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SAWN, inside National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Twenty-four media houses are expected to take part in the football event, which begins on Saturday at the astro- turf of National Stadium, Surulere.

Elumoye disclosed that only members of the NUJ are eligible to take part in all events,  warning that any team  that violate the rules during the game will be punished.

“We have received reports of mercenaries being used by some media houses, especially in the football event in the last edition, and we don’t want such to occur this year. If we discover that a team use ineligible players, such team will be sanctioned,” he said.

Lagos information and Voice of Nigeria will play the opening match on Saturday.
