Mike Abiola, the organiser of Afro Hollywood Awards and publisher of UK-based African Voice newspaper has been conferred with a meritorious award to mark this year’s International Theatre Day (ITD).

Created in 1961 by UNESCO, the International Theatre Day is celebrated annually on 27 March by theatre communities around the globe. In celebration of the day, the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) along with other theatre bodies honoured Abiola for his service to the Nigerian film industry.

Other activities that added spice to the event was a drama performance, Akinkanju Omo (The Courageous) in honour of Barrister Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Governor of Lagos State.

According to Akeem Alimi, the ANTP Governor, Lagos State branch, “the Executive Council of ANTP and the 2013 Planning Committee of ITD considered Prince Mike Abiola worthy of this year’s meritorious award. This is due to his immerse contribution and passionate love for the promotion of arts, film and culture through his organisation’s annual awards to celebrate excellence in the industry.”

Abiola, who was in Nigeria to receive the award, said the development will spur him on.
