Tragedy occurred on Boxing Day in Lagos State, western Nigeria, when a policeman killed three football fans after which he took his own life also.

The incident happened at a viewing centre in Ikosi, Ketu, a bustling suburb of Lagos.

According to eyewitness accounts, an argument ensued between the policeman and the football fans during an English Premiership match between Chelsea football club and Watford on Saturday.

In the course of the argument during the match which ended 2-2, the armed policeman shot the victims at close range before shooting himself.

The owner of the viewing centre has been arrested and was being interrogated at the time of this report.

The identities of the victims could not be immediately ascertained.

Some fans of English Premiership clubs in Nigeria are known to be very violent when their teams lose. This has resulted in some being stabbed to death during street brawls after matches.
